The honey we produce and bottle at honeybrook farm is raw organic honey. Our raw organic honey is unfiltered, unrefined, unheated and utterly extraordinary. Our raw organic honey is full of enzymes, royal jelly, pollen, propolis and natural simple sugars. Raw honey also contains an array of vitamins and minerals, including niacin, ribloflavin, pantothenic acid, calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorous, potassium and zinc. Honey contains a variety of flavonoids and phenolic acids which act as antioxidants, scavenging and eliminating free radicals. The fields of dutch clover, wildflowers, vegetables, fruits and surrounding forests where our bees gather nectar have never been sprayed with pesticides or chemical fertilizers.
Lets take a look at what is in raw organic honey.
- ENZYMES: Raw honey is enzyme rich. Vitamins and minerals are only activated by enzymes. The enzymes in raw honey help to initiate the process of digestion and reduce the body's need to produce enzyme reserves of the pancreas and other digestive organs. Wonderful long-term benefits of this enzyme-sparing activity are good health, energy, fewer illnesses and a healthy immune system.
- POLLEN: Known as one of nature's most complete foods and vital for plant reproduction, it is carried flower to flower by the honey bee. She brings the rich, golden powder back to the hive where it serves as food for the colony and eventually makes it's way into the honey. Pollen has an array of nutrients, including 22 amino acids, a dozen vitamins and 28 minerals. It has shown to boost immune systems and when local raw honey is consumed, to build up resistence to local allergy problems.
- PROPOLIS: The sap bees gather from leaf buds and the bark of trees. It is used by bees for repairing the hive and honey comb. Propolis has shown to possess cancer-preventing and anti-tumor properties. These substances include caffeic acid methyl caffeate, phenylethyl caffeate and phenylethyl dimethylcaffeate. Researchers have discovered that these substances prevent colon cancer in animals.
What about honey in the grocery store? Commercial honey producers heat their honey at high temperatures to break down the natural sugar seed crystals to keep the honey from crystallizing over a longer period of time. This allows the grocery store to keep the honey longer on the shelf. Unfortunately honey heated over 115 degrees F destroys the enzymes, antioxidants, vitamins and flavour. Commercial producers also force the honey through micro filters to remove pollen grains and propolis so they have a very clear honey. It looks good but it has lost most of it's health benefits.
